Almost €3M has been allocated to over one hundred and fifty (150) firms from 15 CARIFORUM countries under the Direct Assistance Grant Scheme administered by Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export) over the period September 2008 to May, 2010 reports Kirk Brown, Senior Grant Advisor, Caribbean Export. The priority sectors under the 9th EDF Caribbean Trade and Private Sector Development Programme (CTPSDP) which received assistance under the Scheme includes professional services, creative industries, information and communication technology and health and wellness. In addition agriculture, agro-processing, apiculture, business support organisations, manufacturing and tourism were among other sectors which received assistance.
According to Mr. Brown, “Ä total of 660 persons across the 15 CARIFORUM countries received training in proposal writing, including Business Support Organisations (BSOs) personnel who provide on the ground assistance to firms accessing funding programmes. There was also overwhelming response to the 3rd and final Call for Proposals under the Scheme which saw a 78% increase in the number applicants.”
He further stated that with the receipt of a passing grade on the Institutional Assessment of the execution of the 9th EDF CTPSDP, Caribbean Export is better able to assist CARIFORUM firms in priority areas such as agro-processing, light manufacturing, fashion, creative industries (audio-visual), professional services, specialised tourism and alternate energy, under future EDF programmes.
