The 1688 Orchestra and Collective is a Barbadian business dedicated to the creation of Caribbean musical productions of excellence. The group was founded by Dr Stefan Walcott to keep young musicians in Barbados involved in music. It has since evolved to become an all-in-one management and production Company that manages large scale productions as well as the 1688 Big Band and the 1688 Collective which has performed at numerous Jazz Festivals throughout the Caribbean region.

Company Achievements: Successes, Awards, References etc.
Our Orchestra’s debut performance at Barbados’ National Festival of Creative Arts led to an official launch at Frank Collymore Hall in January 2010. Our Orchestra has since gone on to perform at numerous events including the inaugural Pan Fusion show, which featured Liam Teague and Victor Provost and the nationally broadcast Riots Commemoration event. This group was also featured at the Frank Collymore Hall’s signature “City Nights” event.

Sustainability Aspects
We are committed to social activities and in 2011 did a “Fah De People” tour, where we performed to the public for free in order to expose them to instrumental music. The group is now on its 5th “Fah De Children” tour doing the same in primary schools.

The 1688 Nonet, the smaller of the “big groups”, has done two tours within the region- one to Suriname for Carifesta and the other to St. Lucia for the Jazz and Arts Festival. The Orchestra also recorded and released its first CD, Bajan Jazz Routes Vol.1 in 2012- a ground-breaking first ever big band and steel pan recording done in the Caribbean.
