Training Initiatives

3rd Meeting of Caribbean Business Support Organisations (BSOs)

Over 40 organizations participated in the 3rd BSO Meeting organised by Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export) under the theme “Remaining Competitive in a Global Crisis”.

The opening session Mr. Philip Williams, Executive Director of Caribbean Export, Mr. Jean-Marc Ruiz, Head of the Political, Economic and Trade Section of the European Commission’s Delegation in the Dominican Republic, Mr. Domingo Jimenez, National Authorizing Officer of the Dominican Republic and H.E. Andres Vanderhorst, Executive Director of the Dominican Competitiveness Council. They stressed the importance of fostering competitiveness throughout the Caribbean region via the strengthening of regional networks and the promotion of innovation.

Dr. Deslisle Worrell, Director of the Caribbean Centre for Money and Finance was guest speaker. He presented a detailed analysis of “The impact of the global crisis, the responses of Caribbean governments, and the choices available to Caribbean businesses”.

The meeting included workshops on Strategic Alliances; Fostering Competitiveness; Innovation and Design; Capacity Building and EPA Challenges. Participants exchanged best practices and shared experiences with a view to strengthening the services delivered by Caribbean BSO’s. Their overall objective was to help upgrade the international competitiveness of CARIFORUM States.

Amongst the alternatives proposed with a view to promoting competitiveness in the region, was a closer cooperation between training and research institution and the private sector through strategic alliances. Furthermore, the participants exchanged ideas on how to use Caribbean culture and heritage to promote distinct and authentic Caribbean products in the world market.

The Export and Investment Promotion Agencies of Castilla and Leon (ADE) and Catatonia (ACC1O) made presentations on their experiences and opened the door for future collaboration with their counterparts in the Caribbean region.

The meeting included a presentation on the revamped Caribbean Business and Investment Support Network (CARIBISNET) an internet exchange platform developed by Caribbean Export with a view of promoting collaboration, information exchange and the development of joint services amongst its members.
