An estimated 40 music industry representatives from the CARIFORUM states and Martinique attended the World Music Expo (WOMEX) in Copenhagen, Denmark from October 26 to 30. The group will form the Caribbean Pavilion was presented by Caribbean Export Development Agency, the Regional Council of Martinique and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Martinique.
WOMEX is an international music trade fair described by the United Nations Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as “the most important international professional market of world music of every kind” and is said to do for the music industry what the Cannes Film Festival does for the film industry. It includes conferences, mentoring consultations and networking sessions that provides opportunities which could lead to international touring and album distribution.
The Caribbean delegation included producers, singers, instrumentalists, copyrights societies, managers, agents and music video producers. Their participation was aimed at promoting the image and reputation of the Caribbean (CARIFORUM states and Martinique) through audio-visual, music and dance, as well as providing support for individuals and companies representing the cultural industries in the Caribbean as they seek to increase export sales.
The project is also aimed at promoting business linkages between CARIFORUM and Martiniquan industry practitioners; encouraging co-productions (CARIFORUM and Martinique countries) in regional and extra-regional markets; and promoting music from Martinique as part of the Caribbean culture.
The Caribbean presence at WOMEX 11 was facilitated under the 10th European Development Fund Regional Private Sector Development Programme and INTERREG IV C.
WOMEX 11 is expected to attract 3,000 delegates and 1,400 companies from 94 countries. Thessaloniki, Greece is the venue for WOMEX 12 which is slated for late September.
