The Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export) officially announces the publication of the Special Call for Proposals – Food Safety for CARIFORUM agro- processing firms to receive financial assistance as part of the Regional Private Sector Development Programme (RPSDP) funded by the European Union under the 10th European Development Fund (EDF).
Agro Processing is one of the high priority niche sectors identified by the Region to be strengthened to benefit from EPA provisions. The Agro Processing industry has a number of competitive constraints that currently hinder the expansion of the sector in CARIFORUM, including poor product consistency, expensive and unreliable transportation, poor quality packaging, fluctuating local prices for inputs/raw materials, lack of cold storage and limited production and quality management capacity. In addition future prospects for participation of CARIFORUM companies in the international food markets are further constrained by the main challenge which is the conformance with international acceptable food safety practices. While the challenge also exists among the few large enterprises in the Region, it is very prevalent among the small, medium and micro-sized enterprises (SMMEs). Caribbean Export has therefore launched a Special Call for Proposals – Food Safety focusing on the EU market.
